Minnie FODEN and Arthur BROUGH were married in 1927 in St James, Congleton, Cheshire.82,83 Arthur BROUGH was born in 1907.76 He died on 10 Jun 1945 in Labuan, MALAYSIA.84 From The Congleton Chronicle, 29 Sep 1995. 50 Years Ago:

A Congleton victim of Japanese brutality, L/Cpl. Arthur Brough (38), R.A.M.C., is reported by another Congleton man, who escaped with his life in the same camp, to have succumbed to inhuman treatment. His wife and two children live at 50, Astbury Street. The tragic news is conveyed in a letter to Mr and Mrs Gallimore, 52, West Street, from their son, Gunner William Gallimore, who, telling of the horrors of their prison camp from which he had just been released, wrote:"I helped Arthur Brough as much as I could, but he seemed to get every bit of trouble that was going, and that was plenty. I saw him the day before he 'went', and gave him a few sweet potatoes and celery leaves, which I managed to get from outside. He said then that he would make it all right, but I could see that he'd had it. He finished up about six stone". An insight into how the "slit-eyed toads", as he calls his captors, treated their prisoners, is furnished by the following passage in the same letter: "Every so often, they used to have a 'hate week'. We had to stand to attention while the little bastards hit us as hard as they could, kicked us with hobnailed boots and finished up by practising ju-jitsu on us. The pity about the atom bomb was that only two were dropped".
